When I try to install.NET Framework 3.0 I get a 1603 error, that is said by the log to involve Windows Communication Foundation. But the release notes (or wherever I checked) for Windows Communication Foundation list FIFTEEN different possible causes, none of which I recognize as applying to my case. This computer is a new XP (actually refurbished, but so far very little is installed on it - just MS Office and Webroot security). I'm guessing it's XP Home based on the fact that its windows look dumbed down compared to those on my XP Pro PC, but I can't tell for sure. This XP has 3 GB of memory and a Pentium 4 Core 2 Duo 6300 motherboard. Almost forgot: in addition to the apps just mentioned, Windows Media Player version 11, MS C 2005 Redistributable, and MS C 2008 Redistributable are installed; also 'MS WMF 11 Redist for MTP, Windows Media Audio & Video Support' (whatever that is).
These are all part of the installation of Sony Vegas Video 9.0, which also needs.NET Framework 3.0. It was in the attempt to install Vegas 9.0 that the failure to install.NET Framework 3.0 manifested itself. Is there any chance it would help to install XP Pro instead of the XP Home that I believe resides on this PC? I have a still shrink-wrapped XP Pro complete with license code and all. Unlike my XP Pro PC, where right-clicking My Computer identifies the operating system and what service pack I have (along with identifying the computer chip and the amount of memory), this XP tells me nothing - which is one of the reasons I suspect it must be XP Home.
However, Microsoft's update.windows website tells me I need SP3, from which I infer that I must have been at SP2. Nonetheless, I installed SP3 just to be up to date.
Then I installed.NET Framework 2.0 successfully, which made me optimistic that the attempt to install.NET Framework 3.0 would succeed at last. It bombed again, as always. Thanks in advance for any other suggestions. Thank you thank you thank you. I tried each step just as you presented them and presto, it worked. And the subsequent installation of Sony Vegas Video 9.0 (my original aim) succeeded as well. The OEM in this case was a no-name company here in Atlanta.
I tend to doubt if they tweaked XP very much, though they did place their name and logo in the System Properties dialog window accessible from Control Panel System, where I also learned that this XP is in fact XP Pro after all. I still don't know why right-clicking My Computer on my other (moribund) XP Pro PC brings up the System Properties dialog while doing so on this one brings up a highly un informative 'My Computer Properties' window.
(Yes, it's more 'logical' given that I clicked on Properties, but still.) P.P.S. Speaking of names, isn't OEM supposed to stand for 'Original Equipment Manufactuer'?
If so, isn't it a misnomer since they generally only assemble it, more or less as you or I might do if we bought all the parts? Well, I'm not out of the woods. Vegas Video 9.0 installed but attempts to load it result in an error message. I have of course contacted technical support at Sony Creative Software (makers of Vegas) about this. I anticipate that they will tell me to remove.NET Framework 3.5 since their installation called for.NET Framework 3.0. So I'm asking you how to do that.
I notice that the Add or Remove Programs dialog has separate entries for.NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. Will it suffice for me simply to remove 3.5 or is there something else I should know? Also, their install of Vegas 9.0 announced at the outset that (in addition to.NET Framework 3.0) it needed Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable and Visual C 2008 Redistributable.
In the course of my attempts to install Vegas, I installed both of these myself, outside of their installation wizard. Then as part of my successful Vegas install following your solution, I found their wizard still saying that it needed Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable and Visual C 2008 Redistributable as prerequisites. So I let them go ahead and install them (not that I had a choice in the matter). Now I find that there are two copies of both of them showing up in the Add or Remove Programs dialog: The 2005 Redistributables have the same names but different sizes (5.25MB vs. 4.21MB), while the 2008 Redistributables have different version numbers (9.0.30729.17 9.64MB vs.
Can I simply remove one of each? And which one? It ought not to matter, but I'm guessing the bigger ones are the ones I got directly from Microsoft while the smaller ones are the ones that were installed by Vegas. Thanks for your help! Peyton Peyton.
